Gothic Cathedral

I was inspired to make this Model by the picture " Gotischer Dom am Wasser " from Schinkel (German master builder and painter 1781-1841).
Here is a direct link to the picture from Schinkel.
To create this Cathedral I modeled 15 different terrains ( most of them with a black and white blending maps).
I tried to reduce the resolution of each terrain as much as possible, to get a handleable model.
Now the model has 277 parts needs 10 MB. of memory (1,5 zipped) and is easy to handel even in big scenes.

If you see the tower would you belive that everything is made with terrains?

There are more pictures and explanations with this model in my gallery.

Cathedral inside

Today I know, that I can model this cathedral with mesh objects as well ( for some parts much more easy ), but it was a very creative process to use terrains only.
I learn that there is no limit, that everything is possible with terrains.
Most of the parts are low resolution terrains. It was real fun to finish the model and to render the first picture with the light coming through the windows!

Every part, the columns, arches, windows and the vault are made with lattice.
At first I tried to model the column with primitives, but the amount of objects was to much. Now the columns are made with 8 terrains with a low resolution.
The most difficult parts are the arch and the vault, it cost my a lot of try and error exercise to model them
